Why is merlion important to singapore?

Why is merlion important to singapore?

Answer :
the merlion is singapore's national icon, also the tourism board's emblem.

The Merlion has a lion head and a fish body resting on a crest of waves. The lion head symbolises the legend of the rediscovery of Singapura, as recorded in the "Malay Annals". In ancient times, Singapore was known as Temasek, a Javanese word for sea. In the 11th century A.D, Prince Sang Nila Utama of the Sri Vijaya Empire rediscovered the island. When the Prince first landed on Singapore's shores, he sighted a mystical beast which he later learnt was a lion. The Prince then decided to name the island "Singapura" which in Sanskrit means Lion (Singa) City (Pura). The fish tail of the Merlion symbolises the ancient city of Temasek and represents Singapore's humble beginnings as a fishing village.

Has Merlion From Sentosa Island ,Singapore been removed?

Answer :
OMG HOW CAN U THINK THAT IT WILL BE MOVED>

I AM a SINGAPOREAN AND THAT IS A NATIONAL ICON>!!!!!!!!!

WE WILL NEVER MOVE IT!!!

NEVER,!

i been up to the top of it twice.

Answer :
It was still there last August.

But the 'real' one is at the esplanade.

Answer :
It should still be there, but there is another (older) merlion by the esplanade.

Answer :
it's still there :)

you should go to Singapore River and see the Merlion there. it's nicer

Answer :
unfortunately, it's still there. It's NOT a national icon, they made up the story in the first place and created this sentosa concept to attract tourism (having little national sights to offer)...it's like the disneyland but much much smaller

Is the Merlion tale real?

Can someone quote me the Merlion's tale? I heard it somewhere but don't really remember it. Basically is it about the 2 kids saw a merlion rise from the ocean?

If you guys read Doraemon comic, there's pretty logical story line about how a legend born. Normally there was nothing extraordinary, maybe just someone was short-sighted and thought what they saw is real, but it's not. For example a Merlion may be just a sea lion with some seaweeds (make it bigger and cooler), looked like mermaid (??!!!) with the lion head, so the kids were so scared then run away, thus the legend was born, and everyone sticked to it.

Merlion is a nice symbol for Singapore though.

Answer :
The merlion (Simplified Chinese: 鱼尾狮) is a statue with the head of a lion and the body of a fish. Its name comes from a portmanteau of mermaid and lion. The merlion was designed by Fraser Brunner for the Singapore Tourism Board in 1964 and was used as its logo up to 1997. The Merlion continues to be its trademark symbol. It also appears frequently in STB-approved souvenirs. The original Merlion statue stands at the opening of the Singapore River while a taller replica can be found on Sentosa Island.

According to the Singapore Tourism Board's publicity, the lion head and fish body of the creature recalls the story of the legendary Sang Nila Utama, who saw a lion while hunting on an island, en route to Malacca. The island eventually became the sea port of Temasek, a precursor to Singapore.

What does the Singapore Merlion represent and what is the story behind it?

The Merlion is a purely fictitious creature created by the tourism board of Singapore, being half fish, half lion. It arises from the legend of Singapore's founder, the Malay Prince Sang Nila Utama, who visited the area around 11 AD and reportedly spotted a lion (who knows what he really saw, since lions are not indiginous to the island or anywhere near the Malay peninsula), and renamed the city Singapura ("Lion City" in Sanskrit). The fish tail represents the original name of Temasek (meaning "The Sea" in Javanese) The tourism board designed the Merlion as a promotional symbol back in 1964.

Answer :
Theyuks answer is rather correct. Merlion is friction.

Singapore is derived from Singapura. Tradition says it is after a lion was spotted in this island, thus called it Singa (Lion) Pulau (Island). Which later become Singapura.

But Pura pura also pretend, or look alike. It may be the lion look alike. Whatever it is, there is no lion in Asia.

Can someone interpret this poem that got to do with singapore (all veiws are welcome).?

www.postcolonialweb.org/singapore/litera…

Answer :
My interpretation would be that the author and whoever he is talking to is talking about a beached fish. Although I don't know any creature of the sea that may have what could be seen as a mane? A very curious poem to say the least.

Help!

i need information on the merlion controversy. erm... more specifically the parliamantery debate in 1999 over the authnecity of singapore merlion.

Answer :
Hi, I'm sorry that I can't find any good info for you on the parliamentary debation in year 1999 over the authenticity of the Merlion. But I've found the legend for you.

Legend behind this beautiful creature:
The Merlion is a beautiful hybrid of a lion and a fish. Strong and lithe, its lion head alludes to the fabled beast that once roamed the ancient island state, while its fish body symbolizes Singapore's origin as a prosperous seaport.

First built as an eight metre tall sculpture in 1972, the Merlion was located at the mouth of the Singapore River. In 1996, this prominent icon of Singapore was reproduced, on a much larger scale, on Sentosa island.

Once inside the Merlion, visitors are enthralled by the interior. Themed as a sunken pirate ship submerged in subterranean rocks, the tower is laden with treasures and jewels left behind by Bugis pirates who once dominated the waters of Southeast Asia. The enigmatic atmosphere is complemented by sounds of crashing waves, howling winds, fog horns, and the cries of seagulls. To complete the underwater effects, visitors can peer through the breaks in the rockwork to view colourful tropical fishes and corals.

What's the first thing to come to mind if u are asked whats so special about SINGAPORE?

Anyone knows about this country (non-singaporeans)? What do foreigners think of immediately when asked about singapore? thanks! i'm trying to find whats so special about the country. (none of those cliche merlion, kiasu people, esplanade thing)

Answer :
First thing to come in mind thats special : Singlish

What foreigners think immediately about Singapore:
(from relatives) FINES and no Chewing gum

Answer :
I think of MRT,don't know why.May be because only here i see people are boarding on the train, while poor others struggling to alight. Still can't use to it.

Answer :
I have always admired and enjoyed the safe and clean environment throughout the city state. Then there are the superbly efficient transport and telecommunication infrastructure that make living so convenient. Last but not least, Singapore is truly a gourmet paradise - such high quality food and variety from food-court fare to fine dining establishments. These come to mind as "first-impression"; as a regular visitor, I feel there isn't a physical structure that can be representational of Singapore (national icons like Great Wall, Liberty Statue etc). If I were to choose one, it would be "Phua Chu Kang" - no la, just play play only!!

Answer :
Singapore's unique identity.
The Singaporeans, its Singlish Language, its culture, the glorious FOOD galore. The feeling of Home, the peace, the security, the sights, the sounds. The Law and Order.

Answer :
phua chu kang-singlish
it has many skycrapers in the tiny island
clean, will be compound if throw rubbish everywhere
transportation is good

Answer :
a colleague from Vietnam once mention to me.. that its so green in singapore... i believe it. the rest would probably be the food and shopping.

Answer :
I think of political suppression, followed by poor service attitude, followed by clean & organized streets & buildings.

Don't you think this poem is so funny?

I live in Singapore
A small island set in the sea
Near Indonesia,near Malaysia
Would I ask for more?

Huge tall buildings roam the sky
Merlion's water,out from mouth
All the way,to the south
Come to Singapore,won't you try?

Durian king,Esplanade
Happy,happy all the way
Eat your burger on a tray
In the waters,we will wade

Singlish singlish,liddat lor
Veli happy , veli song.
Singlish is really,really strong.
Go read wiki,lor lor lor.

I wrote myself.Tell me what you think of it

Answer :
yes make me one if u dont mine. it is a good poem keep up the good work. my name is Tracey Thomas and i live in the united states of american. and i don't fine it racits

Answer :

Answer :

What should I do from 2pm to 4pm next day (26 hours) in Singapore?

In my list: 1.Zoo --> Night Safari --> Dinner in China Town -> Cafe in City Space -> Merlion Square; 2.Sentosa -> Underwater World -> Sun bathing -> Lunch in Bukit Junction -> Shopping -> Changi A.P .
- Do you think It's possible?
- Which area do you think is suitable for the above trip to stay in convenience?
- Where can I find the brand new and used laptop shop/market in Singapore?
- Which places do you think I have to go in Singapore for experience purposes?
- Are there any Sale off season during June? Especially for electric stuffs?
- We are a 4 ppl family (3 adult + one 12 y.o. child), is there any Quad room available in Singapore hotels?
- Equinox Res., City Space, New Asia Bar, which of them is better for view-seeing and relax?

Answer :
I am assuming that you want to FULLY maximise your stay in singapore, so i'm going to give you as maxunyn time schedule allocation:

1) 2pm - 3pm : get a hotel ( go to travelocity or zuji.com, i cant help you with that ) If you want relative affordable, go to furama hotel (it's near chinatown), higher end Pan Pacific Hotel at the City Hall area )

2) 3pm - 5 pm: If you really want to know Singapore, and wants to go Sentosa, go to IMAGES OF SINGAPORE , it's a 1 hour museum - trip - education, it shows you EVERYthing about singapore in one hour. and then take your pictures at the nearby "Carlsberg Sky Tower" (just beside the "images of singapore" 15mins $15dollars (the largest Merlion statue is nearby you can take pictures),

and have your snacks at Subway there, then head down to your Underwater World, and go to Siloso Beach for your Sun bathing (This will satisfy the kid, and it is knowledge learning for adults)

3) 6 - 9pm Wash up and head down to Night Safari (its an amazing place with the tram rides opens at 7pm (night creatures are truely different!), have your dinner there. Try to leave the place early so you have more time

4) 9-10pm: Get back to hotel and get the child to sleep! If he doent sleep yet go to Esplanade area to take a BUM BOAT RIDE down singapore river. ( you will see where clarke quay is during the boat ride)

5) 10-2am: Time for the adults, you cant miss this place! night life clubs and pubs / bistro at Clarke Quay. It's an amazing place you dont want to miss. (what's there: ministryofsound, forbidden city, fashionbar, all things interesting for ages 18-55)

next day:

6) morning: Go to have your breakfast at Chinatown / explore the place / museums / or go to BUGIS, get to SIM LIM SQUARE to get the cheap electronic products, make sure you always walk away from the shop owners so they will give you better price as you are a tourist. Remember to pick up the brochures at the entrance of most shops (level 3 - 5) with the price lists so they cannot give you 2nd prices.

7) Go to Equinox res for lunch, you can see the whole of city Singapore from there, no time for detail. If you have additional time, take a taxi to suntec city and take the DUCK TOUR (it's a bus-boat that can travel on road and water, you can experience a guided tour from there)

8) Pack your bags and go to Airport to enjoy the experience at the airport.

Areas cluster: chinatown / little india / city hall / singapore river / bugis / sentosa

Answer :
Night safari opens at night, how are u gonna go to dinner at chinatown after that? the place would be closed. I'd suggest skip the zoo. Why don't u absorb the sights and sounds of real singapore instead of going to the zoo?? havent u seen the tigers, lions, chimpanzees and stuff before? watch it on nat geo! Laptop shops are all over Sim Lim Square. that's where locals buy their computers. Lunch at Bugis Junction, not Bukit junction. What's so nice about seeing the merlion????sigh,...i dont understand u guys..........

Answer :
Depending on your interests and whether you have children
1. The zoo is a great place for a family and you can always go to the night safari after that which will bring you to about 10PM. You can get dinner in the zoo or night safari but it is expensive but then again, what do you expect.. this is a tourist attraction location.
2. If you want any electronic shopping, you can go down to Funan Center where you have literally hundreds of shops selling electronics. Not worth getting used notebooks as the new ones are very competitively priced. Shopping in Changi airport is fine but I have always found them to be quite similarly priced compared to the city. Oh, if you are from out of town, you can claim back your Goods and Services Tax rebate at the airport after you have checked in. I suggest you go to Changi Airport website for details on what document proof needed. I believe the Great Singapore Sale should be on during June as it is the school holidays.
And since it is the holidays, make sure you book your hotels soon. Hotel rooms are getting very tight in Singapore these days. You can always get family rooms or adjacent rooms.
Other things to do would be to take a ride in the Singapore wheel which will give you a great view of Singapore. And then you can always take a leisure lunch at Marina Center which is within walking distance of the wheel. And also do some last minute shoppings at the mall there or at Suntec City ( walking distance)
Dinner at Boat Quay or Clark Quay although Clark Quay is more happening these days. Lots of restaurants and drinking joints.

Have fun...

Where can I get a Merlion Soft Toy?????

I am looking for a Merlion soft toy and one that wears a Singapore t-shirt. I went Esplanade and nothing there. I am going to the Zoo and Sentosa soon. Let me know if I can get it from anywhere else in Singapore? I need to get it by this Tuesday.

Thank you very much in advance to all those who respond.

Answer :
I once saw this cute Merlion plush toy at a shop in Clarke Quay, but that was about 2 years ago. Maybe you should give it a try.

Thank you very much. When you said Clarke Quay, it reminded me that I can get souveniers from places like Chinatown and even Clarke Quay as these are all tourists attraction areas.

I got a merlion without a t-shirt and there was a lion with t-shirt.

Thanks once again. :)

We will be going to Singapore next next week, Travel advice please...?

So, on Feb 20, my family and I wil go to Singapore, any spots on Singapore where there is less money to spend because I heard that it is a bit expensive there. Any food restaurants that are cheap but very satisfying, not only to the stomach but to the pocket as well?

I'm so excited to see the Merlion and Little India

What is little India like? Is it hot on Singapore?

AH!, there are a lot of questions that goes through my head the more we go near our date flight.... any Travel advice on Singapore would do, please help me.... thanks

Answer :
During the period which you are visiting Singapore...

Singapore have a hot and humid climate.
Temperature ranges from 24 degree celsius to 31 degree celsius. Light rain can be expected once in a while. Strong or moderate breeze.
Singapore will most likely not experience stormy weathers during your stay here. According to the recent updates, Singapore is having at least 80% below average rainfall recorded for the month of Jan already.

Little India - Hop on to NorthEast Line MRT and alight at Little India Station. Little India is the place where you can learn about the culture of one of the ethnic groups in Singapore; Indians. Little India is basically a "shopping street".

Visit Chinatown too! Chinatown is where you can get to know about the Chinese Ethnic Group. Take NorthEast Line MRT and alight at Chinatown station.

Visit some other places too: Singapore Zoo, Night Safari, Jurong Bird Park, Haw Par Villa, Sentosa. (Must see on Sentosa Island: Songs of the Sea)

Food: For food try the Hawker Centers instead. You can easily get a plate of delicious local delights for an average of SGD$2. Restaurant in Singapore can be expensive.
Must try: Satay, Laksa, Black Pepper Crab, and many more!

Answer :
Singapore is a nice city country.

If you want to stay in cheap, you may go to serango area which is very near from Mustafa Plaza, a big shoping mall in Singapore. You will find there many hotel and restaurent in very cheap. Especially Indian and Bangladeshi food there, very cheap and tasty.

Little India is palace, street near to Mustafa Plaza, just walking distance. There are many shops and you can bargain.

If you need hotel name and address, you can ask me. I shall try my best.

Answer :
cheapest kind of food is at the hawker centre if ur not fussy, and dont really care for the presentations part of it,
Little India in Serangoon is colorful, try the indian food as well like naan ,chapati bread, paneer (cottage chesse) in tomato sauce but ask for not too spicy
weather can be really hot in the afternoons but can be breezy as well
you must go to clark quay for the night life and orchard road for uptown experiences..lots of tourists there
visit sentosa and night safari...and hope you and family have a wonderful visit

Answer :
expensive - yes and no (depend on where you lives presently)

resturant is not cheap , cheap food try hawker centre

Merlion and little india is free of charges

singapor etemp is around 28 - 34 celcious

Answer :
Little India on Sunday evenings, after 8. Its name comes alive with the massive crowds there. More details here: http://www.visitsingapore.com/publish/st…

When in Little India, drop by Sri Veeramakaliamman Temple (141 Serangoon Road) that's hard to miss from the main road. "The pujas (prayers) are at 0800, noon, 1600, 1830 and 2100. To get the full experience, these are the best times to come." Other things you may want to try: http://www.littleindia.com.sg/stb/stb_mu…

Here's a great picture of part of Little India by Ibnuyahya: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/co…

If you want shots of the local folks, especially the older generation, just take a seat at any old coffee shop (called "kopi tiam") with no air-con and order a coffee or tea. If you're lucky, you just may spot different races sharing a table, with the Chinese talking in Malay and the Indian rattling off in a Chinese dialect.

Wanna try ordering the drinks like a Singaporean? Have a gander here: http://whitelephant.wordpress.com/food/r…

Interested in watching a local flick or two? http://www.sinema.sg/oldschool/ would be a good place to check out. Tickets are S$6 or S$8. Not enough time? You can also pick up some DVDs there or order online if you're curious (but not curious enough to go :P).

And yes, do try the local food. Here's a small list of them:
- Hokkien Mee
- Char Kway Teow (rice noodles fried with a dark sauce)
- Carrot Cake (not the dessert you know at all)
- Prata and Tissue Prata (plenty in Little India!)
- Thosai/Dosai (also in Little India.)
- Chicken Rice
- Popiah http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Popiah
- Satay (thin sticks of skewered barbecued meat)
- Laksa
- Lontong

Hawker centres or coffee shops would really be your best bet for cheap yet yummy tummy-filling food. They are usually without air-con, unlike food courts in malls.

Answer :
Eat at the food courts in most malls, or hawker stalls on the streets, they can be really cheap. Often things like rice/chicken for under $4 S each.

Little Indian is free to walk around
Chinatown walk around for free
Arab Quarter is free to walk around

Singapore Zoo is cool there is a Splash park there to have fun in.

Use the bus system/MRT system to get around

When buying things in places like Little India don't go with the first price, tell them to go lower, if they say $25, say $18 back. If you don't like it walk away.

Temps now in the high 20s/low 30s (Celsius), muggy at times but a nice breeze. Can be raining storms as well sometimes stop/start

What do singaporeans think about the merlions?

ive heard that people from singapore either embrace the merlion as a national symbol or they dislike it because it's too touristy
so anyone from singapore what do you really think about the merlion?

Answer :
Some do view it as a sense of identity.

But most of us just see it as a tourist attraction and a Singaporean symbol.

There are many other Singaporean symbols too -->

1. Vanda Miss Joaquim - national flower

2. Singapore Flyer - biggest observation wheel currently in the world

3. Esplanade - arts and theatre, known as the 2 "durians" because of its architecturre

4. Our flag which we take pride in

5. Our pledge

6. Sentosa Island - underwater world, beaches, and upcoming Universals Studios.

7. Food

6. Racial and religious harmony

Answer :
merely a bid to attract more tourists to Singapore though I don't suppose that it is as great an attraction now than it was a couple number of years back.

now, it is more of leisure tourists coming to shop and corporate ones coming here on business meetings.

Answer :
just for lafs
you know if a pupil vomits in schools, we say he merlion!!!! evil right?

What is a Merlion in singapore?

What is Merlion and was it strucked by lightening ?

Answer :
fish with a lion head, or lion with a fish tail. nothing special however it is believe to bring good luck to singapore. IT had been relocated before building the bridge and yes, it had been struck with lighting before. Some people say that because the merliion do not like to face the IR (Casino)

Answer :
The Merlion in Singapore is a statue of a half-lion half-fish creature. It's just a well known statue along the waterfront. According to this article http://www.straitstimes.com/Breaking%2BN… yes it was struck by lightning this year.

Answer :
Merlion is iconic object for Singapore like the Big Ben of England and the Statue of Liberty of USA.... I have another interpretation for the lighting strike.... it reiterates the fact that Singapore is going to be run by PAP for a long time .......take a look at the logo at http://www.pap.org.sg/ ... it is "Lighting" core.....

Answer :
merlion is a figure which represents singaporean magic it's head is a lion and the body is a fish.
it is a mascot in singaporean matches.I have never heard of lightening struck merlion so i dont know anything .

Answer :
Merlion is a Symbol introduced by Tourism Board of Singapore in 1967. Basically it's to represent Singapore is a island Country, and also known as Lion City.

A Singaporean gift to China.?

What are some good ideas of gift that i can give to my friends in China.
Im a singaporean in singapore. i just got back from an exchange with a school there. im thinking of giving my friends there some things more representative of local culture (or at least, something found in the malay penisula).
I don't want to send them things like Merlion merchandises (keychain, plush) as these things do not carry any significance if they have not visited Singapore before. (anyway, these things feel like some fake, created culture for the country)
im preparing to send it over by mail, so a light/small item would be nice.
an additional note. if you are a chinese, what do you think you would like to receive from a friend from overseas?

please tell me what would be a good gift, and where i can likely get them.
Thank you!

Singapore's Merlion fountain figure spews water. What about poor old Sir Stamford Raffles?

The Merlion seems to have replaced old Raffles in the country's affections. Couldn't his statue be converted into a fountain, a la Mannequin Pis, Brussels's main tourist attraction? Better than a vomitting sealion, I think, and more anatomically and functionally correct.

Answer :
RAFFLES PLACE- name of a mrt station in Singapore. The most important CBD area here.
RAFFLES INSTITUTION, RAFFLES GIRLS SCHOOL,RAFFLES JUNIOR COLLEGE- the most elite schools in Singapore.
who says he is forgotten?

AND MIND YOU, MERLION AINT JUST A VOMITING SEALION.
MERLION AINT A SEALION IN THE FIRST PLACE.
GET UR FACTS RIGHT.

Answer :
Sir Stamford Raffles duty is to stand there and overlook the Singapore River. Now there are two, one at Victoria Memorial Hall and the other by the bank of the river next to Old Parliament House.

Answer :
it really depends on the amount of shopping you are going to do. if you are not planning of buying much things or expensive items, and if you don't have to pay for accommodations, it should be more than sufficient.

there are many money changers in singapore too. if you are concerned, then bring some of your local cash with you. you can change more if you need them.

Answer :
since u dun ve 2 pay 4 d accomodations, SGD6000 is sufficient 2 cover ur stay here. with dis money, u can even go 4 some shopping n expensive food. it cost less than SGD100 entrance fee for ur whole family 2 each attractions spot.

Which landmark/icon comes to mind when I say "Singapore"?

E.g Merlion, The Singapore Flyer, The Esplanade, The Airport...

Answer :
Changi Terminal 2 and the Rain Trees lining the motorway beyond it.
To me, they evoke the "feel" of Singapore more than the Raffles.

Answer :
Hawker centers. Seriously. They're my favorite place(s) there.

Answer :
Ive been to the airport and when you say it what pops up is Burger King
